Earlier this week, we launched a Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) resource for all Ontario physicians and nurse practitioners.
This summer, the Government of Canada passed legislation that amended the criminal code to give access to medical assistance in dying to those who are eligible. In an effort to have a consistent approach to the MAID process the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care (MOHLTC) engaged us to develop a resource that supports clinicians with the provision of medical assistance in dying.
Divided into five sections, the resource outlines key considerations in federal legislation and guidelines by various provincial regulatory colleges in a logical sequential order. It supplements existing regulatory body requirements or institutional processes for clinicians with patient requests for MAID.
Leading up to the launch, our Knowledge Translation in Primary Care project team worked with several stakeholder organizations and providers in order to create a useful resource for all medical and nurse practitioners in Ontario. We engaged approximately 30 clinicians in focus groups or usability sessions, and worked with more than 20 stakeholder groups through our extensive resource development process.
