Our primary care academic detailing service is now available to Ontario physicians

The academic detailers work through a learning session before the launch of the service.

We’ve launched our academic detailing service for primary care providers across Ontario!

In 2017, we wrapped up our academic detailing service in long-term care (LTC) as part of the Appropriate Prescribing Demonstration Project. It delivered LTC providers information on best practices for appropriate prescribing of antipsychotics for residents living with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, and the role of appropriate prescribing in falls prevention. Participants found academic detailing valuable and favourable compared to other educational experiences, and 97 per cent said they would be interested in receiving another visit.

We are now offering our academic detailing service in primary care. This voluntary and free service will provide family physicians one-on-one visits with an academic detailer who will offer discussions on balanced, evidence-informed best practices tailored to areas of physicians’ expressed interests. These visits are usually 30-45 minutes long and will be provided at a time and place that is convenient for each physician. The first visit focuses on supporting family physicians care for their patients who are living with chronic non-cancer pain. The service is currently available in six LHINs across Ontario, with expansion to additional LHINs in the coming months.
